Homecoming Game: Cadets drop North Put 40-21

By Connor Simmons | Sep 25, 2022 4:15 PM

Cadets hosted longtime rival, North Putnam Cougars, for their 56th meeting between the two schools. Cascade looks to get back to .500 in the win column against the Cougars. North Putnam won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Cadets defense would step on the field first in front of a great Homecoming crowd Friday Night. Early on in the first quarter, North Putnam would solidify the run game by taking it 77 yards on 7 plays to take an early 7-0 lead on a 3 yard run. Cougars would only go through the air once out of the 7 plays. Cadets would get great field position on the kickoff. The offense would lean on their 3 headed backfield to drive down the field. Cadets would drive 31 yards down to the Cougars 25 yard line to find themselves in a 4th and 3 situation. The offense elected to play aggressive, but North Putnam would deny the offense to continue the drive. North Putnam would lean back on the run game on the ensuing drive finding themselves in Cadet territory. Cascade’s defense forced the Cougars into a 4th and 5. North Putnam would elect to play aggressive as well, but the Black Swarm defense would deny the Cougars to continue the drive. Cadets off would take over at the -39 yard line. Cadets would drive the ball 61 yards on 10 plays finishing off with a 3 yard touchdown run by SR Liam Farmer to get the Cadets on the board 7-6 to open up the 2nd quarter. North Putnam would continue to have its way vs the Cadets defense driving 65 yards on 9 plays to find a wide open Cougar receiver in the end zone to take a 14-6 lead with 9:21 remaining in the second quarter. Cadets offense would start the next series at the -28 yard line. They would drive the length of the field converting three 3rd down conversions and one 4th down conversion. From 1st and goal from the 4 yard line, SR Liam Farmer would find the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the night (14th on the season) with 3:21 remaining. North Putnam drove down the field using their no huddle offense and found themselves with a 4th and 4 threatening to score with 1:35 remaining in the second half. Instead of playing the field position game, Cougars elected to stay aggressive, but were denied after an incomplete pass was overthrown. With 1:26 left in the half, Cadets had one timeout and 56 yards to go. Cadets would only need 5 plays to put up points. After a timeout, FR Brady Trebley would find SR Devon Weigle down the visitors sideline for a 34 yard touchdown pass to take the lead for the 1st time in the game 20-14. Cougars had 29.5 seconds left, but would stall out, Cadets took the lead and momentum into the locker room. Cadets received the opening kickoff of the second half. The offense came out with the adjustment of huddling up and slowing the pace of the game down. Cascade would drive 62 yards on 9 plays to find the end zone to stretch their lead to 12. JR Logan Gibbs would rush for his first career touchdown on an end around from the 15 yard line. Momentum stayed with the Cadets at that point. On the ensuing possession for the Cougars, they would struggle to find any wiggle room from the Cadets defense. JR Logan Gibbs would come up with a tackle for a loss on a 2nd and 10. With the Cougars facing a 3rd and 15 there is not much you can do, but pass the football for an opportunity to convert after the Cadets had shut down the rush attack from the 1st quarter. Cadets defense would hold after JR Gavin Weakley would have an almost interception from the Cougars. Cadets offense would start on the -21 yard line, but a big 3rd down holding penalty would cost the Cadets offense and force them to punt for the 1st time in the night. After some big halftime adjustments, Cadets defense would go on to force their second 3 and out of the second half. Cadets would get the ball back with 45 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. JR Damien Appleby would finish out the 3rd quarter with a solid run setting the Cadets up with a 2nd and 1 opportunity to start the 4th quarter. Trebley would hand the ball off 3 more times, but a big 3rd and 6 awaited the Cadets offense. Throwing the football only 4 times previously, the Cadets elected to call FR Brady Trebley’s number. Trebley would playaction back and find a wide open FR Toby Savini on a corner route with no North Putnam defender around him for 7 yards and Savini would outpace the Cougars to the end zone for the longest play of the night and to extend the lead 32-14. On the ensuing possession for the Cougars, they would be forced to play a more up-tempo game, down 18 with only 9:54 left to play in the game. Cougars would drive all of the way into scoring territory to the 15 yard line. A 4th and 1 situation where North Putnam had no other option than to go for it, would be denied by SR Devon Weigle and the defensive front for the Cadets. Cadets offense took over at the -15 yard line with 6:09 to play in the game. Cadets looked to keep the clock moving with their run attack, moving the chains with FR Savini and SR Farmer. On the 5th play of the drive looking at a 2nd and 6, FR Trebley would reverse out and hand the ball to SR Farmer. Farmer would shoot out like a cannon through the line of scrimmage and race 66 yards to the end zone to put the icing on top of the cake for his 3rd rushing touchdown of the night (15th on the season). SR Devon Weigle would run in the 2 point conversion to extend the lead 40-14 with just 4:00 minutes to play. North Putnam on the ensuing possession would take the ball 80 yards and would convert on a 29 yard passing touchdown on a couple missed tackles on the play, shortening the lead 40-21 with 1:40 left to play. FR Brady Trebley would take three knees down and wind out the clock for a 40-21 Homecoming Victory over rival North Putnam. The 4 seniors would go on to be 4-0 on Homecoming Games throughout their football career.
