Cascade Cadets will battle South Vermillion Wildcats, as the Cadets look to turn on survive and advance mode during their postseason. Cadets have made it out of the first round 2 of the last 3 seasons under Head Coach Connor Simmons, but have not hit the Sectional Finals yet. Greg Barrett, 43-27 in his 7th year at South Vermillion, 100-61 in his 15th year overall. 2023 vs Common Opponents NONE All-Time Record South Vermillion leads the series 3-1. The Eagles currently hold a 2 game winning streak. Last Cascade win came in 2010 28-14 at home. These two teams haven’t played since 2019 when South Vermillion came from 17 down to beat the Cadets 41-38 behind Garzolini pass attack. SETTING THE SCENE Friday Night Cascade will host South Vermillion Wildcats for the first round of the 2023 IHSAA Sectional #37 games. South Vermillion currently leads the series 3-1 and is riding a 7 game winning streak coming into this game since losing to Sullivan in week 2. Cascade will wear all black at home for the playoffs. Cascade is coming off a hard fought game against the South Putnam Eagles losing 17-20 after holding a 10-0 lead at halftime. Both teams will be tested this week and at the end of the game Friday Night, one team will continue their 2023 season and the other will turn in their helmets the following week. What’s at stake for both teams? Both teams want to live to see the following Monday on the practice field. Cascade will employ their heavy run wing-t offense, while South Vermillion will bring in their air raid pass attack. Playoff weather looks to be 55 degrees and a beautiful Friday Night. Buckle up, bring your warm weather gear because IHSAA playoff football has arrived and there is one team in this game that will survive and advance. #9 South Vermillion who sits at 8-1 versus Cascade who sits at 5-4… IT’S PLAYOFF FOOTBALL! A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY Cascade finished the regular season 5-4 for the second straight year, which hasn’t happened since 2005 and 2006. CADET NOTES Cascade will look to get the IHSAA playoffs off to a hot start versus South Vermillion Wildcats. The two teams haven’t played since 2019 where the Wildcats knocked off the Cadets 41-38. Cascade uses a No-Huddle Wing-T attack on offense and a base 3-4 on defense. The Cadets are a young group with a bright future ahead with 9 starters on offense and 7 starters on defense being juniors or below. Cascade has had 9 fumbles in the last 4 weeks that has kept points off the scoreboard. Cascade will need to play great defense and run the football in order to have success Friday Night against a heavy pass attack from South Vermillion. Last season, Cascade dropped Greencastle 50-24 and then lost to sectional runner-up Sullivan 30-14. South Vermillion played the eventual sectional 37 champion Linton Minors and lost 47-21. Both teams will look to improve on last year's losses. Cascade run attack versus South Vermillion’s pass attack. SO Brady Trebley leads the offense that averages 352 yards per game. Trebley is completing 57% of his passes for 465 yards, 8 touchdowns and has zero interceptions on the year. Trebley also adds 4 rushing touchdowns on the ground. Trebley jumped into 4th place all time in passing touchdowns with his 18th of his career. He looks to settle in and continue to be the leader of the no-huddle wing-t attack as the Cadets look to advance to the sectional #37 semi finals next week. FR Rhyder Williams will serve as the back-up quarterback for the Cadets. Multiple running backs will look to carry the rock. SO Toby Savini leads the backfield with 931 yards, averaging 10+ yards per rush and a team high 12 touchdowns. SR Damien Appleby added 523 yards, averaging 6+ yards per carry and 7 touchdowns. SO Dayton Mink 503 yards with 7 touchdowns and SR Caiden Clements has 392 yards for 3 touchdowns. The running back group is averaging 298 yards per game with 34 touchdowns and almost 7 yards per rush on the ground. Wide receivers will continue to add in their hands to the pass attack this year. SO JT Roshong leads this group with 3 catches for 57 yards and 1 touchdown. JR Daemen Mason had 3 catches for 30 yards. Tight ends will look to be both physical blockers and pass catchers at the tight end position. Both played a vital role in the success of the rush attack, but also in the play action pass. FR Trent Austin has hauled 7 catches for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns averaging 14.9 yards a reception. Four Juniors continue to anchor the offensive line for Cascade. The offensive line averages in weight a combined 200lbs. Last week, the Cadets only managed 330 yards of offense against South Putnam with 306 coming on the ground. This group has led the way to a total of 3,169 total yards and 43 touchdowns through night games. The offense averages 37 points per game. The defensive line will look to set the tone up front against a big offensive line for South Vermillion. JR Duncan White leads the defensive line up front with 26 tackles, 10.0 TFL, 4 sacks and 2 forced fumble. They will need to plug holes and use their speed to contain the Wildcats Spread offense which averages over 363 yards per game. The linebacking group will look to anchor the 2nd level defense. SR Jacob Potts and SR Brayden Cartmel have combined for 114 tackles and 14 tackles for a loss. SR Jackson Cornelius came off the bench and piled up 42 tackles and 7 tackles for a loss. Three Seniors lead this group and will look to play aggressive and fill the gaps against South Vermillion. The defensive backs will be up for the challenge this week against one of the top passers in 2A football. This group is the youngest on the team with 2 sophomores and 1 freshmen starting. FR Lucas Farmer leads the entire defense with 69 tackles and has only played in 8 games. SO Toby Savini added in 56 tackles, 1 interception, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 fumble recovery for a 70 yard touchdown. SO Marcus Hobson, SO JT Roshong and JR Daemen Mason will look to lock down the corner spots and limit the heavy pass attack that averages 218 yards per game. SCOUTING THE WILDCATS South Vermillion Wildcats are led by 7th year Head Coach Greg Barrett and currently hold a 8-1 record. The Wildcats have rattled off seven straight wins since their lone overtime loss to 2A Sullivan in week two of the season. South Vermillion is led by a Junior Quarterback Garzolini who has passed for 1,955 yards and 28 touchdowns. The Wildcats have rushed for 1,313 yards, 5.6 yards per carry and 28 touchdowns on the year. Wildcats will lean Junior Linebackers Shryock and Hill who comes in with a combined 143 tackles and 8 tackles for a loss.
